I received an assignment from SintLucas@Work from SintLucas. This is an assignment with a real client. This client was the Antonius School in Keldonk, The Netherlands.
A learning plaza had to be designed for the Antonius School. A learning plaza is a space in a school where students can work on assignments independently or in groups. Students from different grades come to work in the same room. It is important that there is a clear structure so that everyone can focus on their own task.
There were a few points that we had to keep in mind. For example, the still fairly new blue floor covering had to remain in the room, as did the dark red color of the doors and a number of furniture in a play corner.
I started with a word web.

From this word web I made my design principles. The design principles I have chosen are functional, playful and structure.
The learning plaza is a relatively small space where many different things have to happen. It is then important that the space is furnished as functionally as possible. I want to achieve this with multifunctional furniture that, for example, can be made smaller or used in several ways.
The room is for students from groups 1 to 8, so it is important that it is a playful space that is attractive to all groups and fun to play, learn and work in.
Because it is a playful space and at the same time students from different classes will be present in the room, it is important that structure is provided. This way, the space is clear to everyone and everyone can be busy with their own tasks.
After making the design principles, I made a mood board.

After the mood boards I started the design process and started with a stain plan.
In order to divide the space functionally, I have a large podium as an eye-catcher of the space. Most often this will stand as a large staircase in the room. The stage can then be used as a reading corner and you can sit on the cushions. When there is a performance, the stage can be flattened. All tables can then be moved to the side and the stools in a theater set-up.
Just as the stage is functional, so are the furniture. The inspiration for the benches from the furniture comes from a design by Johanna Dehio The hockerbank.

Because the space can be used in different ways, all furniture can be placed against a wall object. The legs can be slid off the tables and the table can be placed on a wall object in separate parts. To get the playful effect in the room, I used stools and benches, these can also be taken apart.
There was little budget for the assignment. The stools from the furniture are from Ikea with a self-made appropriate shelf on it as a bench. The seating area of the stools is painted in a color to playfully bring out the design principle again.
Concept:
The space was very cool because I had used a lot of different shades of blue. I made a gradient from the blue color of the floor that had to stay to the red color of the doors that had to stay. I have included the colors that appear in the gradient in my final design. I also used large hanging lamps for the height differences and a playfull effect.
